Intercarpal Joint
By : Maab MadianIntercarpal Joint
⦁ Definition
It is the side where two or more bones come together , even if the movement occurs between them or not.
⦁ Classification
The joints are classified according to the tissues that lie between the bones, into:
⦁ Fibrous
⦁ Cartilaginous
⦁ Synovial
⦁ The synovial joint
Synovial joint is a connection between the bones where the elements involved are separated by an articular cavity(narrow cavity) .
And it is classified by the type of movement they permit to :
⦁ Hinge
⦁ Saddle
⦁ Plane
⦁ Pinot
⦁ Condyloid
⦁ Ball and socket
Note: The movement occurs only at the synovial joint , while the fibrous and cartilaginous joints are.
.
⦁ Definition
-It is the joint which connects the carpal bones
-The intercarpal joints are synovial plane joints
⦁ Ligaments
1-Interosseous ligaments of proximal and distal carpal rows
2- Palmar intercarpal ligaments
3- Dorsal intercarpal ligaments
⦁ Innervation
Articular branches of:
1.Anterior interosseous nerve
2.Posterior interosseous nerve
3.Deep branch of ulnar nerve
4.Dorsal branch of ulnar nerve
⦁ Blood supply
Palmar and dorsal carpal arches
⦁ Movements
only gliding movement between the carpals
⦁ Articular surfaces
Joints of the proximal carpal row : bind articular surfaces of scaphoid, lunate, and triquetrum bones.
Joints of the distal carpal row : bind articular surfaces of trapezium, trapezoid, capitate and hamate bones.
Midcarpal joint : binds distal articular surfaces of proximal carpal bones, proximal articular surfaces of distal carpal bones.
Pisotriquetral joint : binds articular surface between the pisiform and the palmar surface of the triquetrum bone.
