Anterior interosseous artery

By : Sedra Muhammed

Origin:

it arises from the common interosseous artery

Course:

• It passes downward in front of the interosseous ligament.
• Along its course it’s accompanied by the anterior interosseous nerve (branch of the median nerve).
• Overlapped by the Flexor digitorum profundus m. and the Flexor pollicis longus m.
• At the upper border of the Pronator quadratus m. it perforates the interosseous membrane to reach the back of the forearm, at this point it makes anastomoses with the posterior interosseous artery and form the dorsal carpal arch.
• it is accompanied by the terminal part of the posterior interosseous nerve (from the deep branch of radial nerve).

Branches:

• Before it pierces the interosseous membrane it gives off a branch downward behind the Pronator quadratus m. that joins the palmar carpal arch.
• It gives off the median artery which accompanies the median nerve, this artery is sometimes enlarged and runs with the median nerve to the palm of the hand.

Function:

• Gives off nutrient arteries that supply the radius and ulna, and muscular branches that supply adjacent muscles.
• Sends some perforating twigs through the interosseous membrane to supply deep muscles of the extensor compartment.
Note: the anterior interosseous artery is held in close contact with the interosseous membrane by a sheath of areolar tissue.
