Peripheral NERVE Injury

The nerves in human body are connected with the brain and spinal cord to transport information and sensation in all the body. Sometimes, the nerve can be injured.

The cause of it

1.Laceration( means the nerve tissue cut or tear)
2.Severe bruising contusion (such as Gunshot wounds stretching)
3.Traction
4.Injection (such as drug injection)

Symptoms

1.Unrelenting pain
2.Burning sensation
3.Tingling or total loss of sensation in the area that has been damaged which the nerve supply .

Diagnosis

The doctor orders an electrical conduction test to assess the level of damage in the nerve. May also ask to do :
1. CT scan
2. MRI
3. MRI neurograph

Surgery can be done by two ways :

. Peripheral nerve transfer (means taking a part of the healthy nerve and connects it with an injured nerve, so the fibers in the healthy one grow in the injured or damaged nerve, that makes the damaged one treats).
Peripheral nerve transfer
Peripheral nerve graft (means removing the damaged part of the nerve and replacing it by implanting a small part takes from the healthy nerve.
One of the most commnonly used nerves as a nerve graft source is the sural nerve because of :
1.Its good diameter
2.Its length
These two features makes the sural nerve as the most common donor site utilized in the current medical practice.
