Anconeus Epitrochlearis Muscle

By : Banan Alzubaidi

Definition :

Anconeus epitrochlearis muscle (AE)(also known accessory anconeus ...epitrochleoanconeus muscle ) :

It is a short straited muscle (an accessory muscle of the upper limb). It is located at the medial aspect of the elbow joint. which is the muscle that runs over the ulnar nerve form an arch over the cubital tunnel (formed the roof of the cubital tunnel ).It is present in 34% of the individuals.

Origin :

Posterior surface of the medial epicondyl of the humerus bone.

Insertion :

Onto the olecranon of the ulna Bone .

Nerve supply :

Ulnar nerve

NOTES :

1 ) It is thought by some to be an abnormal extension of the medial portion of the triceps muscle but sometime considered it a variant of the flexor carpi ulnaris because it courses over the groove for the ulnar nerve .

2 )Been observed slight difference in this muscle..they found it is:

1 )narrow or wide

2 )with one head or two heads

3 )tendinous or fleshly

4 )sometime, shaped like a triangle but more often flat and shaped like rectangle

3 )Although this muscle has nearly equal presence in the both genders and on the both sides of the body it is more prevalent and developed in the right sides in men and in the left the side in women .

4 ) should not be confused with the anconeus muscle which present at the lateral aspect of the elbow
.

Clinical importance :

1 )some consider the presence of this muscle has clinicat relevance in the relation to the cubital tunnel syndrome because it is cause compression of the ulnar nerve (this muscle tends to hypertrophied when associated with the cubital tunnel syndrome.....( this condition is not common but you should pay attention to it) .

2 )and other suggested it is considered actually protective for the ulnar nerve ( absence this muscle or osbornś ligament increase the chance of the ulnar nerve dislocation) .
