Nerve to Quadratus Femoris

Overview

The nerve to quadratus femoris is a branch from the sacral plexus

Note

is a collection of anterior ( ventral ) rami of the ( L4–S4 ) spinal nerves and provides most the innervation ( motor & sensory ) to the lower limbs.

(ventral rami of L4–S1 ).
From its nomenclature it becomes clear to us that it will supply the quadratus femoris m. as well as gemellus inferior m.

Course

It leaves the pelvis anterior ( deep ) to the sciatic n. and enters the gluteal region by passing through the lower aspect of the greater sciatic foramen deep to the piriformis m. and passes behind the hip joint in this point it lies anterior ( deep ) to the sciatic nerve and the obturator internus tendon and the gemelli muscles that separate it from the sciatic n.

Branches

1.A motor branch to quadratus femoris m.
2.A motor branch to gemellus inferior m.
3.An articular branch to hip joint.
