Flexor Digitorum Profundus
By : Mustafa AhmedName
The name, flexor digitorum profundus, tells us that this muscle flexes the digits (i.e., fingers) and is deep
(deep to the flexor digitorum superficialis).
Derivation
flexor: L. a muscle that flexes a body part
digitorum: L. refers to a digit (finger)
profundus: L. deep
Pronunciation
FLEKS-or
dij-i-TOE-rum
pro-FUN-dus
(deep to the flexor digitorum superficialis).

General
The distal tendons of the FDP reach their attachment site on the distal phalanges in an unusual manner.
The tendons of the flexor digitorum superficialis are superficial and split;the tendons of
the FDP then pass through these splits to continue onto the distal phalanges. (This is essentially
identical to the arrangement of the flexor digitorum longus and the flexor digitorum brevis of the
lower extremity.)

Supply
INNERVATION
The Median and the Ulnar Nerves
C8, T1
the anterior interosseus branch of the median nerve
ARTERIAL SUPPLY
The Ulnar and Radial Arteries (terminal branches of the Brachial Artery) and the Anterior Interosseus Artery (a branch of the Ulnar Artery)

ARTERIAL SUPPLY
The Ulnar and Radial Arteries (terminal branches of the Brachial Artery) and the Anterior Interosseus Artery (a branch of the Ulnar Artery)
Origin & insertion
Origin : Medial and Anterior Ulna the proximal 1/2 (starting just distal to the ulnar tuberosity) and the interosseus membrane.
Insertion : Anterior Surfaces of Fingers Two through Five the distal phalanges
Insertion : Anterior Surfaces of Fingers Two through Five the distal phalanges
Movement & Action
1. Flexes fingers two through five at the MCP, PIP, and DIP joints
2. Flexes the hand at the wrist joint
MCP joints = metacarpophalangeal joints; PIP joints = proximal interphalangeal joints; DIP joints = distal interphalangeal joints

Notes
.The flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) is the only muscle that can flex the distal
interphalangeal joints of the fingers
.This thick muscle “clothes” the anterior aspect of the ulna
.The part of the muscle going to the index finger usually separates from the
rest of the muscle relatively early in the distal part of the fore-
arm and is capable of independent contraction.

Clinical notes
Irritation of the synovial sheaths of the flexor digitorum superficialis and/or the FDP in the carpal tunnel can press on the median nerve and cause carpal tunnel syndrome
Relations
From the anterior perspective, the FDP is deep to the flexor digitorum superficialis.
From the medial perspective, the FDP is deep to the ulnar head of the flexor carpi ulnaris.
The FDP is medial to the flexor pollicis longus.
Deep to the FDP are the ulna and the interosseus membrane.
The flexor digitorum profundus is located within the superficial front arm line myofascial meridian.
